Chartwell Guest House, a luxury accommodation in Durban

During our tour of South Africa we stayed in this luxurious accommodation, the Chartwell Guest House. The rooms are luxurious with large soft beds, a luxurious bathroom and all the associated facilities. Through the large glass doors you enter the terrace which provides access to the garden with swimming pool and with a view of the sea in the distance. There is a central room where you can enjoy your breakfast in the morning, which you can order from a menu.

Chartwell Guest House, a luxury villa

The Chartwell Guest House is located in the heart of a residential area close to the center of Durban. When you drive in here, it feels a bit like driving into the driveway of someone's house. And despite the fact that Chartwell Guest House is a very beautiful villa, it has little appearance. In that respect it is not a special or unique location.

The monkeys at Chartwell Guest House

What is special about the Chartwell Guest House are all the wild monkeys that meander from house to house through this residential area. I think there were at least 40 monkeys in the garden of Chartwell Guest House on arrival. And as real tourists we thought it would be fun to take a picture between the monkeys.

Do not sit between the monkeys at Chartwell Guest House

The monkeys at Chartwell Guest House were mostly in the trees at the edges of the garden. So our little boy of six sits on the ground in the middle of the lawn in the garden of Chartwell Guest House. That turned out to be a very bad idea. Never sit on the same level with the monkeys. Mama and papa monkey went on the attack and we really had to flee out of the garden into our rooms, where we hid behind the glass front. We were able to pull our backpacks in just in time, because the monkeys had already caught them too. The monkeys spent at least half an hour on the garden table, lurking in our room to see if we really didn't come out, but luckily we were still able to leave through the other side.

No staff present at Chartwell Guest House, Durban

Because there is no staff present in the Chartwell Guest House during the day, such moments are difficult. Because we had no idea that we shouldn't deal with these monkeys like this. At that moment it is difficult that there is no staff to inform you about this or help you when something goes wrong. At the Chartwell Guest House there is only someone present to prepare breakfast and to clean the rooms. That makes the Chartwell Guest House a bit impersonal.

The location of Chartwell Guest House, Durban

The location of Chartwell Guest House is perfect. This luxury villa is located in a residential area close to the center of Durban. It is approximately a 15 minute walk from the Chartwell Guest House to the center and the beach of Durban. Here you will find shops, bars and restaurants. We really had our best steak ever here and it really didn't cost anything. Eating and drinking in Durban is really cheap. And you have to get out and about in Durban, because you can't get dinner in the Chartwell Guest House itself. But with a fifteen minute walk to the center that does not matter too much.

The city of Durban

The city of Durban itself has little appearance, but there are certainly some nice sights in the area, such as; - The Golden Mile in Durban - Golden Mile Beach - uShaka Marine World - Durban Botanical Garden - The Indian Market in Durban - Umgeni River Bird Park

But you won't find authentic Africa in Durban. Durban is a really modern city with the sights to match, but without the cozy African atmosphere.

Our conclusion about the Chartwell Guest House in Durban

All in all the Chartwell Guest House is a great place to stay if you are visiting Durban. But we don't really recommend it either, although we may not be able to say clearly why not. Perhaps because it lacks some charisma and personality and you don't get the South African friendliness that you get in the rest of South Africa. The Chartwell Guest House is luxurious, but it lacks coziness and feels rather impersonal.
