Where have we arrived now? Everything is dead. I only see brown and black. Every now and then we see a small patch of greenery at a hotel or restaurant. But otherwise the whole ride from the taxi to the hotel feels pretty special and a bit sad even. I think we might have made a mistake; we chose the wrong destination to go to. Lanzarote is definitely not where we want to be. But is this first impression about Lanzarote correct?

Lanzarote is truly a unique island. Lanzarote has a very special landscape due to the volcanic eruptions. There is indeed a lot of dead ground, where nothing grows. Large parts of the island of Lanzarote are black and brown. And yet Lanzarote is much more beautiful than the first impression suggests.

You have to discover Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands that you really have to learn to appreciate and for that you really have to go searching for the beautiful places. Our advice is to rent a car to discover Lanzarote. Lanzarote is a fairly compact island with good roads and is therefore really easy to discover by car. There are of course also plenty of excursions to the various attractions that you can book with your travel organization as well as at the various hotels. And then you really discover the beauty of Lanzarote. The volcanic eruptions have destroyed a lot, but they have also created a beautiful landscape with so many unique places. We had never seen a landscape like the landscape of Lanzarote before.

NATIONAAL PARK TIMANFAYA, VULCANOES IN LANZAROTE

Parque National de Timanfaya is located in the southwest of Lanzarote. Parque National de Timanfaya is a protected area in Lanzarote. Here you can see the volcano of Lanzarote. The park is named after the first village that was destroyed by the volcanic eruptions of 1730-1736. These volcanic eruptions have completely changed Lanzarote as an island and it has never been the same again. There was also another eruption in 1824, but it was much smaller and caused much less damage.

Parque National de Timanfaya is open every day from 9am to 5pm. Please note, you do have to pay an entrance fee. An absolute tip is also the restaurant. The meat is baked on the heat of the volcano and is really delicious. Moreover, from the restaurant you have a great view over the volcanic area of Parque National de Timanfaya.

Camel rides are also offered on the way to Parque National de Timanfaya. We did that at the time and I still feel guilty about it. Because once we sat on it and saw other groups riding with camels on the other side, I saw how badly these animals were stumbling. Some were really walking difficult and I thought it was just very sad to see. Everyone should of course know for themselves whether they want to do these camel rides, but we certainly wouldn't do that here on Lanzarote at Parque National de Timanfaya.

JAMEOS DEL AGUA, MYSTERIOUS LAVA CAVE IN LANZAROTE

Jameos Del Agua is a lava cave, created by the lava flows during the volcanic eruption on Lanzarote. It is located in the lava field of the volcano Monte Corona in Lanzarote. Jameos Del Agua was created by the lava flows from the volcano Monte Corona. The light in this cave is very special to see and gives this cave a mysterious touch.

The life in the water of Jameos Del Agua is also special to see.

Today, these caves are also used as a center for art, culture and tourism. Artist Cesar Manrique designed this center in 1966.

These caves are open every day from 10am to 6.30pm. The entrance is € 9.50 p.p., children from 7 to 12 years pay € 4.75 p.p. Under 7 years of age it is free entrance.

CUEVA DE LOS VERDES, STROLLING THROUGH THE LAVA TUNNELS OF LANZAROTE

The Cueva de Los Verdes is a cave system around a lava tunnel. This tunnel has a length of no less than 6 km. And runs from the Volcano La Corono, to the coast. In some places this tunnel is even 50 meters high and 15 meters wide. Cueva de los Verdes are very impressive to see and give you an idea of how gigantic these lava flows actually were.

MIRADOR DEL RIO, THE BEST VIEW IN LANZAROTE

Mirador del Rio is a beautiful viewpoint, arguably the most beautiful viewpoint in Lanzarote. The view from Mirador del Rio on the much smaller island of La Graciosa is especially beautiful. There are also other special points of Lanzarote to see from Mirador del Rio. You can also see the cliff Risco Famara and the Salinas del Rio. This viewpoint on Lanzarote is located at an altitude of no less than 480m. Mirador del Rio was again designed by Cesar Manrique.

PLAYA DEL PAPAGAYO, A BEAUTIFUL SANDY BEACH ON LANZAROTE

Playa del Papagayo is one of the most popular beaches in Lanzarote. Playa del Papagayo is a beautiful bay with white sand. The beautiful emerald green water in this shell-shaped bay remains unmoved all year round. The water of Playa del Papagayo is really completely still.

At the top of the beach is a small and very good restaurant. Also an absolute must. It is especially beautiful here at sunset. The beach is located in the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches of Lanzarote. If you want to enter here by car, you have to pay an entrance fee.

LA GERIA, THE WINE FIELDS OF LANZAROTE

La Geria is the main wine region in Lanzarote. What makes this wine region so special is that it stands in the middle of a sea of lava. The beautiful grape bushes are surrounded by black lava. This is very special to see. Lanzarote lacks groundwater and rain, which is why they have found a unique way to grow these grape bushes in Lanzarote. They only use what they have, Lava.

By burying the shrubs of La Geria in pits filled with lava stones, the spray water is retained longer. So that the shrubs get enough water. On one side of the circle is a small wall with lava chunks. This serves as protection against the wind. La Geria has been declared a protected area of Lanzarote.

There are of course a number of bodegas in Lanzarote where the wine can also be tasted. It is always possible to drive to these vineyards by car.

VISIT WINERY EL GRIFO IN LANZAROTE

LOS HERVIDEROS, EXTRAORDINARY CLIFFS IN LANZAROTE

North of Playa Blanca you will find the spectacular cliffs and rocks of Los Hervideros. The cliffs on Lanzarote are formed from lava rock. Over the years, caves have also been formed in the Los Hervideros cliffs. There are several hiking trails over these cliffs and in some places you can see how cool it is when the waves crash against the cliff. It is best when the waves are high and wild. Then it really is a beautiful spectacle with a cool sound. But for that the sea of Lanzarote has to cooperate a bit.

The beach of Chaco Verde consists of fine black sand. But the most special thing about Chaco Verde is the green lake in the middle of this beach. Chaco Verde is a beautiful bay surrounded by high rocks and with beautiful clear water.

CALETON BLANCA, THE WHITE SAND OF LANZAROTE

PLAYA DE LAS CONCHAS, AZURE WATER IN LANZAROTE

The beach Playa de les Conchas can be found on the small island of La Graciosa. To get to Playa de las Conchas you have to walk for 45 minutes or cycle for 20 minutes. So not many people go to this golden beach with the unique blue water, which seems to change color all the time. If you take a trip to Playa de las Conchas, it will quickly be at the top of your list of all-time favorite beaches. The island of La Graciosa can be reached by ferry from Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca is a pleasant seaside resort in Lanzarote, popular among tourists. Despite the fact that there are many hotels in this town, it still looks quite small. It is certainly our favorite seaside resort in Lanzarote. The pleasant boulevard that runs from harbor to harbor is wonderful to stroll along. With nice shops and terraces and beautiful beaches, Playa Blanca is our favorite village in Lanzarote.

At Salinas de Janubio, salt is extracted from water. Despite the fact that production has continued to decline in recent years, it is worth a visit. TEGUISE, THE FORMER CAPITAL OF LANZAROTE

Teguise is the old capital of Lanzarote and is arguably the prettiest village in Lanzarote with its pretty whitewashed houses. It is especially nice to visit this village, which is located in the center of Lanzarote, on Sunday. Because on Sundays is the big Sunday market in Teguise. Definitely a nice village to visit when you are in Lanzarote.
